Definition: what is photobiomodulation
Photobiomodulation (photobiomodulation therapy, often also called red light therapy or light therapy) is a technology that uses low-intensity LED light, at specific wavelengths, to stimulate biological processes inside cells. Unlike high-power lasers, it is not an ablative technology: it acts without generating significant heat or damaging tissue.
How it works: the role of mitochondria
The central mechanism of action of photobiomodulation involves the mitochondria, the "power plants" of cells. Light at specific wavelengths is absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores (in particular cytochrome c oxidase), triggering an increase in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, the molecule that provides energy to the cell. This biochemical process translates, clinically and aesthetically, into greater regenerative capacity of the tissues.
Wavelengths: they don't all do the same thing
Each wavelength penetrates the skin and tissues to a different depth:
- Blue and green light (417nm–525nm): surface action, useful on skin and superficial microcirculation.
- Red light (630–660nm): penetrates the dermis, stimulates collagen and skin regeneration.
- Infrared (810–1060nm): reaches deeper layers, muscles and joints, for functional recovery and inflammation reduction.
This is why a "wide-spectrum" device, capable of covering multiple wavelengths, allows the treatment to be customized to the goal: face, body, muscle recovery or general wellbeing.
Documented benefits
The most requested applications in beauty centers and medical spas cover four main areas: skin regeneration and collagen stimulation, reduction of joint/muscle pain and inflammation, athletic recovery and performance, and improvement of circadian rhythm and perceived wellbeing.
LED panels or multisensory helmet? How to choose
The LED photobiomodulation panels are the ideal choice for body and face treatments over large surfaces, with scalable power from 10W up to over 1600W for high-volume centers. The FM5 Sensory helmet is instead a device dedicated to multisensory facial treatment, combining LED chromotherapy, binaural music therapy and aromatherapy in a single session focused on de-stress and the client's psychophysical wellbeing.
How to add it to your center's treatment menu
Photobiomodulation lends itself to being sold as a single treatment, as a subscription package (e.g. 8-10 sessions) or as a high-margin add-on paired with existing treatments (face, massage, post-sport recovery). The low cost per session and short treatment times (15-30 minutes) make it compatible with a beauty center's schedule without disrupting the organization.
